This Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak recipe features tender beef patties simmered in a rich, flavorful gravy made with beef broth, au jus mix, garlic, and Dijon mustard. Perfectly seared before slow cooking, the patties become melt-in-your-mouth tender and can be served with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large egg, well beaten
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 ounce packet beefy onion soup mix
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Gravy

  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans beef broth
  • 1 ounce packet au jus gravy mix
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
  • Fresh chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, onion soup mix, milk, and Worcestershire sauce until fully incorporated, ideally using clean hands for even mixing.
  2. Form Patties: Divide the meat mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each into a patty.
  3. Coat with Flour: Place the flour on a small plate and dip each side of the patties in it, gently shaking off any excess flour.
  4. Sear Patties: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties in batches until golden brown on both sides; do not cook through at this stage.
  5. Prepare Slow Cooker: Spray a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Layer the seared patties into the cooker, stacking if necessary.
  6. Make Gravy Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together beef broth, au jus gravy mix, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard.
  7. Add Gravy: Pour the prepared gravy mixture evenly over the patties in the slow cooker.
  8. Slow Cook: Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until patties reach an internal temperature of at least 165°F and are tender.
  9. Remove Patties: Transfer the cooked patties to a plate, leaving the gravy in the slow cooker.
  10. Simmer Gravy: Pour the slow cooker gravy into a large skillet and bring it to a simmer over medium heat.
  11. Thicken Gravy: In a small bowl, whisk together water and cornstarch to make a slurry. Slowly whisk the slurry into the simmering gravy and cook for 1-2 minutes until thickened.
  12. Serve: Either pour the thickened gravy back over the patties in the slow cooker (set to warm) or serve immediately. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
  13. Accompaniments: Serve the Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice for a complete comforting meal.

Notes

  • Do not fully cook patties during searing; they will finish cooking in the slow cooker.
  • The patties will shrink during cooking, so form them slightly larger if desired.
  • If preferred, garnish with fresh parsley for added color and freshness.
  • Ensure the internal temperature of the patties reaches at least 165°F for safe consumption.
  • This dish pairs excellently with classic sides like mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
