Ingredients

Scale

Bread Batter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Streusel Topping

  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice or ground cinnamon

Maple Glaze

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 tsp maple extract
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 Tbsp milk or cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard loaf pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter and dark brown sugar until the mixture is smooth and fluffy, ensuring even incorporation of sugar.
  3. Add pumpkin and eggs: Mix in the pumpkin puree until fully combined, then beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition to create a smooth batter.
  4. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined to avoid overmixing.
  5. Prepare streusel topping: In a small bowl, combine melted butter, flour, brown sugar, and pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon. Mix until crumbly and streusel-like. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared loaf pan, then evenly sprinkle the streusel topping over the batter.
  6. Bake the bread: Place the loaf pan in the oven and bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. This ensures the bread is fully baked without being dry.
  7. Cool and glaze: Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack completely. While cooling, prepare the maple glaze by whisking together confectioners’ sugar, maple extract, maple syrup, and milk or cream until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled bread for a sweet finishing touch.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh pumpkin puree or canned 100% pumpkin.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the bread tender.
  • The streusel topping can be customized with nuts like pecans or walnuts for added crunch.
  • The glaze is optional but adds a lovely sweetness and attractive finish.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • You can warm a slice slightly before serving to enhance flavors and texture.
