Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 20 ounces frozen shredded hash browns (thawed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (divided)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (divided)

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground pork sausage
  • 8 ounces diced ham
  • 1 medium white onion (diced)
  • 1 medium red bell pepper (diced)

Topping

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook Hash Browns: Melt 4 tablespoons of salted butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 20 ounces of thawed frozen shredded hash browns, seasoning with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Cook with minimal flipping until hash browns are golden brown and crispy, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside. Wipe out the skillet to prepare for the next step.
  2. Cook Sausage and Vegetables: Add 1 pound ground pork sausage to the skillet and cook for approximately 5 minutes, breaking it up into crumbles as it browns. Stir in 8 ounces diced ham, diced white onion, and diced red bell pepper. Season again with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Continue cooking for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften and become lightly browned.
  3. Combine Hash Browns and Sausage Mixture: Return the cooked hash browns to the skillet, folding them gently into the sausage and vegetable mixture. Turn off the heat to prepare for cheese melting.
  4. Add Cheese and Serve: Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the hash mixture. Allow the cheese to melt for 2-3 minutes by residual heat. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, allow hash browns to cook undisturbed for several minutes before flipping.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting compared to pre-shredded varieties.
  • Feel free to substitute pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
  • Add diced jalapeños or hot sauce to spice up the hash.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead by cooking hash browns and sausage mixture separately and assembling just before serving.
