Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all purpose flour

Apple Filling

  • 34 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 Tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Streusel Topping

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/2 stick, cold and sliced)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking dish with parchment paper and set it aside. In a bowl, stir together the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until combined. Then add 2 cups of all-purpose flour and mix until a thick dough forms.
  2. Bake the crust: Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking dish. Bake it for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven. The crust will look slightly underbaked at this stage, which is perfect.
  3. Prepare the apple filling: In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced apples with 2 tablespoons flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg until well coated. Spread this mixture evenly over the partially baked crust.
  4. Make the streusel topping: Combine the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour in a medium bowl. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the cold, sliced butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly and well mixed.
  5. Assemble and bake: Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apple layer. Return the bars to the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  6. Cool and serve: Remove the baking dish from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely on a wire rack. Once cool, lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper edges and cut into squares or bars with a sharp knife. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples you prefer, though tart apples like Granny Smith balance well with the sweet topping.
  • Make sure to peel and thinly slice the apples for even baking and texture.
  • Keep the butter cold for the streusel topping to achieve a crumbly texture.
  • For easier removal, ensure the entire pan is well lined with parchment paper extending over the edges.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • Reheat bars slightly before serving for a freshly baked feel.
