This creamy and delicious Spinach Casserole is a perfect side dish that combines tender spinach with a blend of cheeses and savory seasonings, topped with crispy breadcrumbs and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Spinach Mixture

  • 2 (10 oz) packages frozen spinach, thawed and drained
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Topping and Garnish

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for greasing)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with olive oil to prevent sticking and help the casserole cook evenly.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the thawed and drained spinach, sour cream, softened cream cheese, grated Parmesan, shredded mozzarella, minced garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated into a smooth, creamy mixture.
  3. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the prepared spinach mixture into the greased baking dish. Spread it evenly to ensure consistent cooking and an even texture throughout the casserole.
  4. Add Topping: Evenly sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the spinach mixture. This will create a crispy, golden crust once baked.
  5. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes. Bake until the casserole is hot and bubbly and the breadcrumb topping has turned a lovely golden brown color.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and optionally garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and fresh flavor. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Be sure to thoroughly thaw and drain the spinach to avoid excess moisture which can make the casserole watery.
  • Use fresh breadcrumbs or panko for a crispier topping.
  • You can substitute cream cheese with Greek yogurt for a lighter option.
  • Garnishing with parsley adds freshness but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • This casserole can be made ahead and refrigerated before baking; just add extra bake time if baking cold.
