Delicious and comforting baked apples topped with a crunchy oat and brown sugar mixture, lightly spiced with cinnamon. This easy dessert is perfect for a cozy night in and can be baked or air fried to suit your preferences. Optional garnishes like whipped topping and caramel sauce add an indulgent touch.

Ingredients

Scale

Apples

  • 2 apples, sliced in half, seeds and stem removed

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons light margarine or butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Garnish (optional)

  • Reddi Whip topping
  • Drizzle of caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Cut the apples in half and carefully scoop out the seeds and remove the stems, creating a small hollow in the center of each half.
  2. Mix the topping: In a bowl, combine the softened margarine or butter with the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir until the mixture is evenly incorporated and crumbly.
  3. Assemble in dish: Lightly grease a baking dish and place the apple halves cut side up. Fill each hollowed-out apple half evenly with the oat mixture, pressing gently to ensure it stays on top during baking.
  4. Bake the apples: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Bake the apples for about 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples appear swollen and tender.
  5. Air fryer alternative: For a quicker method, place the stuffed apple halves in an air fryer at 350°F for 15 minutes until cooked through and the topping is crisp.
  6. Serve: Optionally garnish with Reddi Whip topping and a drizzle of caramel sauce for a delightful finishing touch. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples you prefer, but firmer apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith hold up well during baking.
  • Substitute brown sugar with coconut sugar for a slightly different flavor profile.
  • For a gluten-free version, replace flour with almond flour or gluten-free all-purpose flour.
  • Make sure the butter or margarine is softened to blend well with the dry ingredients.
  • Leftover baked apples can be refrigerated and reheated gently before serving.
